Choosing Hope (2 Kings 5:1-15a) Ps T L Mukumba 27-Dec-2020

Naaman was a Gentile who chose hope in a hopeless situation.

  • Naaman was a gentile and the second in command to King Ben Hadad II the King of Assyria. He had leprosy needed healing. His wife maid (slave girl), who he (Naaman) had captured from Israel convincingly told him that their was a man of God by name of Elisha who could heal him of his leprosy disease. This maid was not shy of thge word of God.

  • Her words were convincing to her Mistress and Master

  • Why would God of Israel heal a man who was a Gentile and outside of covenant

  • He was enemy of Israel who kidnapped little Jewish girls, a leper who was isolated and left to die. These people knew nothing about the sovereign grace of God . God was showing and preaching His grace to all people.

  • Naaman deliberately chose hope and went to Israel seeking help from his problem. We all need to choose hope in hopeless situations.

  • When Naaman reached the man of God, he was told to go and wash in river Jordan seven times He was angry. He was angry because he had gone with a preconceived idea of how the Lord was supposed to heal him . These were the reasons of His frustration, anger and rage.

  1. I thought he would surely come out to meet me

  2. I thought he would stand by me and call on the name of Jehovah, his God

  3. I thought he would strike his hand upon me and heal me

  4. Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel.

  5. May I not wash in them and be clean

  • Oh how we come to the Lord with preconceived ideas of how He is going to do it. This happens in our live, sometimes we come with various reasons and ways of how we want things to happen.

  • The Lord wanted Naaman to learn the lesson of humility and obedience.

  • He also wanted men of all ages to learn that God does not honor human greatness, and that His thought are not our thought, and His ways are not as our way

  • When he came from water the seventh time, leprosy was gone

  • God wants us to wash ourselves with the water of the word.

1 Peter 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
Isaiah 12:3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

John 15:3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.

John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

James 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
  • The Lord wants us to seek him and live a holy life.

1 Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
Isaiah 1:18-19---18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:

The are Five ways that sequentially happen in human cycle when we are in need and when we come to Lord for help:

  1. Naaman needed the Lord (1-3) - This first level of any man- The Need level

  2. Seeking the Lord (4-10) - This the second level of any man - The seeking level

  3. When we want help, we want to use any other means (v5; v11, v14)- We want to use any other means to get our break through- The any means level. The Frustration Level.

  4. Resisting the Lord (11-12) - The resistance to Lord level

  5. Trusting the Lord (11-15a) - The trusting level.

If you are aware of these five levels and ways in man, you will not destructed. You will be hopeful even in an hopeless situation. Oh how the Lord is expecting your hope. Stop reasoning around, believe in the Lord and all things are possible if you believe. as he touched Naaman, he will touch you a well. Our God is not a respecter of many, He doesn't use any other means except His word and our faith. May the Lord lift your faith even in those simple things, thrust in the Lord.

Lastly I would like to say If doors are not available for you to go out, find the windows. If the windows are locked. There must be a chimney or something. There should always be a way out and the way is the Lord

Keep on Holding your head high, stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but morning comes. Always Keep hope alive.

Hope is a wonderful thing, something to be cherished and nurtured, and something that will refresh us in return. And it can be found in each of us, and it can bring light into the darkest of places.

Wish a prosperous Year 2021. Good day
